I've been kind of slacking on posting here since January because I've been working on looking for a job through on-campus recruiters and taking on a million projects at once. However, I am proud to say that I was scooped up by Abercrombie and Fitch and will be designing graphic tees for them! I got the news yesterday and am super excited! Its been a very long process but its paying off! In short, now I can draw my attention back to my senior thesis (among other projects) and I hope you guys follow along! Dracula/Wine Label?

So last semester I came up with a bomb book cover for Dracula. However, I wasn't able to bring it to final but this semester I was assigned a wine label project- one red and one white. So I thought to myself deep red/drinking= a potion for something leading to sex and then I remembered this gem. And so, the stars aligned and now Dracula will have yet another association with red liquids in my book.
Anyway, here is a detail of the start of the painting for this project.

Work in Progress: Her Cups Runneth Over

So here's the scoop:

In 2009, America's favorite 'every woman', Ms. Barbie herself turned 50. That same year, two books came out disputing who should rightfully be credited for bringing Barbie to life. On one end, we have Ruth Handler, the woman who was inspired to make a doll that she fashioned after a german comic book character. Opposing her is Jack Ryan, an engineer who built the prototype of Barbie. The question of who is more to thank is really a question of which came first, the chicken or the egg.

Regardless, the only thing that both books agreed on is that Handler and Ryan felt that the doll needed to have large breasts. Hence, the title of the article that this illustration belongs to. Ryan is accused of being a pervert, and Handler a naive woman wanting to set an example for girls of what a grown woman should look like. Bottom line- cup size is the only concurrence.

My illustration features Barbie reading what the authors have to say about her in what is a literal reflection on the subject. One hand covers her breast and the other, her mouth as she is essentially silenced by those taking credit for her popularity.

This is a rough composition so a little refining is to be expected.

I finally finished Lagerfeld!

I feel the man is a genius! I made an illustration as an homage to Lagerfeld. For those of you who are unfamiliar with him, he is a very influential and controversial figure in the fashion world. It was Lagerfeld who came up with the FENDI logo in the sixties when he was put on board to revamp the label. And so, my piece is a reflection on how he came up with the idea. I thought it would be fun if it was a happy accident (as so much in art is). The hangers reflecting on his glasses make a double "F" which is where his concept was born. My own experience in working retail has inspired me for this piece, seeing as how even the most uninteresting things can take on a character (pun intended) of their own.

The One

Good Morning,
Even though school is out, I've stayed true to form and got a late (night) start on an illustration for ya. This is version 2/ sketch 1 for a campaign for Dolce and Gabbana's men's fragrance, The One. You may be asking yourself, "what's up with the deer?"
Let me explain.
In buddhist culture there are three senseless animals- the deer, the tiger, and the monkey. I stumbled across this while doing some research on the number 1. Most of it pointed to the symbolization of greed. Greed is often represented by monkeys, as they are the most intelligent beast, and it is believed that these animals have a strong connection to the number one, ergo the cologne and birth to my campaign for the fashion empire. "Why the hot guy?" Well, just google Dolce and Gabbana ads.
Two more illustrations are to follow (to complete this triptych). One featuring a monkey, and one featuring a tiger. I'll keep you posted!

It's been a while..
But here we go again.. This is my illustration for page 1 of Dracula. It will be accompanied by a page of text to the left hand side. This, of course, is the tight line for the image which will be fleshed out in oil paint. This is Dracula, btw as a young man(?). In the story he looks younger as he grows more powerful so this is sort of a foreshadowing.

As promised I'm getting back into the swing of posting. This little number is a doodle I made in class. Psychology, to be exact, which is ironically driving me crazy. I had a song by Jennifer Lopez stuck in my head as I was drawing this, and its lyrics became a little vignette. As small as this is, I was surprised at how fast I drew it considering it's been a minute since I've picked up my sketchbook. Luckily my Psychology book made a great substitute to brush up the ol' wrist.

So this is the beginning of my piece for "While the Women were Sleeping." The article is about a couple vacationing on a beach in Spain, and basically this less than attractive man is obsessed with recording his freakishly beautiful girlfriend on his video cam. Later in the article, we find out that he films her because he's going to kill her and wants to keep a record of her good looks for after she's dead. My painting is of the girlfriend as she lays on the beach.

Loggerheads

This illustration is for the article, 'Loggerheads'. It's about this guy who has a fascination with turtles. He recalls his childhood in which he tries to hide his homosexuality from those around him. He and his best friend (who he secretly loves) would often catch these loggerheads just to watch the little critters interact. The turtles are a metaphor for hiding in a shell, as the narrator feels he has to do. So, my piece is about a conspicuously gay turtle trying to hide his true colors (pun intended). I think the pink turtle is fun!

Here's the final for my second assignment for Brandes' class. The theme was pet/man/machine. I chose to do a piece on mother nature and industrialization. She's the (wo)man, the buildings are the machine, and the itty bitty birds are the pets. I intended the piece to be a statement about the destruction of natural beauty so I guess its a little more serious/political than I usually do. Anyhow, ink was the mandatory media so that's why this is black and white too.

So, forget this chronological order thing I talked about in a previous post... I don't remember the exact order everything goes so I'll just post it sometime soon. Anyway, for our final assignment for Computer Illustration, we had to come up with a business identity for marketing ourselves. Naturally, I chose to do a fun/fashiony business card. It's supposed to be my spin on a playing card (so you can't read my poker face.) Here's the tight sketch for two different versions. Im going with the second one for now. I'll post the final when I'm done!

Here's assignment number two for Thiel's class. The article we had to illustrate was about people who look up diseases/illnesses when they suspect they are falling victim to bad health and diagnose themself. I found this pretty ridiculous but can totally see it happening. So, I thought it would be fun to illustrate someone consulting their computer about medical issues. And where else would this occur but Dr. Google's office?

I might add that Thiel haaaaaated the green background so I think I'll change the color around till I get something less intense. And lastly, the scanner croped my figure's feet and some of the floor cuz it wasn't big enough for the painting, but you get the picture.

Oh hayyy!

So this semester has been crazy busy. As a result, I have neglected to update this blog. However, I'm getting on that riggggght now. The Mad Hatter once told Alice, "Start at the beginning and when you get to the end, STOP." So this advice I will follow. I'll take you along my semester in chronological order. To begin with, I'll show you my first photo shoot of the semester at Selby Gardens. Oh yeah, I'm a photo minor; and these are the start of the monster I'm creating.

New Year, new work!

Well, this is my first illustration assignment for my Junior year at Ring-a-ling. Mr. Thiel gave us an article about cars. Nothing too profound. It was simply a reflection on muscle cars of the 1960s and their incredible horsepower. It was more about the nostalgia of the cars and the era. As a result, I wanted to make a piece that was fun and had a retro feel to it. I also thought it was important to have the suggestion of a car but not actually draw A CAR because I think cars are boring.

So, i came up with this number to communicate the idea of a car without spelling it out, so to speak. I looked at a lot of pin up/cheesecake artwork for inspiration as well as books on poster design and cars. I decided that I wanted my piece to be interesting from every angle so I flipped two people holding one steering wheel so that either way you look at it, the image would be just as captivating.

Any whoo, I've babbled enough, so the last thing I'll say is that the image on the bottom is the tight sketch, and the image at the top is the final!

For finals we had to illustrate an article from a magazine. The article couldn't be more than 3 months old, and we had a list of magazines to choose from. As the stars would have it, the first magazine I picked up (Newsweek) had a piece on Barbie. The article was about Barbie's 50th birthday this year, and the controversy over who invented the dynamic diva. Two books have come out on seperate toy creators, fired from Mattel, who claim they are responsible for bringing us the doll. Each refutes the other's involvement in creating Barbie's look and the mudslinging goes on. As a result, I jumped on the opportunity to make art on this pop icon and so, my piece features Barbie "toying" with both books.

...Barbie and Drama. What's not to love?

Wolf In Sheep's Clothing Illustration

This piece was a twist to the saying, "a wolf in sheep's clothing." The assignment was to take an animal and have it disguised as another animal. The catch was that the costume was to be made of found objects appropriate for the animal's use, and it need to be obvious that the animal was having a hard time pulling off the disguise. I chose illustrate a mouse dressing up as a peacock for the reason being that peacocks are pretty and the mouse too wanted to be beautiful.

This painting was for a project where we had to design a CD cover for a song by one of our favorite artists. Naturally, I chose Janet Jackson's "Rock with U". This is not a portrait of the artist though, it's actually my friend Miznah. I had her pose for me under colored lights because I really wanted to play with the lyrics of the song, "strobe lights make everything sexier." Consequently, this painting is a combination of taking things I love- icons like Janet Jackson, catchy tunes, bright colors, and sultry poses all into one.

This guy was for our "every hair on the dog" project.

We had to pick an animal and render the crap out of it's fur in acrylic paint. The purpose was to represent texture as well as possible. So, I decided that this little mouse was a good choice. I also used gold leaf on this piece. It was my first time experimenting with gold leaf, and after some direction from my professor, I feel it is a strong piece... gold leaf and all.
